Participatory design is the bedrock of every KDI Productive Public Space. An active role by the community in the design process helps us to create projects that address pressing community needs and ensure sustainable change. This summer in Kibera our intern, April Schneider, designed and conducted each of the workshops for KPSP 04. The workshops ranged from a simple needs assessment to choosing components based on size and cost of structures and in relation to the overall project budget. This design process led us and the community to design a public space that will have a sanitation block, kiosks, two multipurpose areas, a children’s recreation area, and a passive natural recreation area.
