Kenya Bamboo Centre representative Mr Pollicurp and Chiara Camozzi from COOPI have been supporting KDI in finding a solution for bamboo treatment, after the termites invaded and attacked some of the bamboos at KDI’s KPSP 03. This brought up an idea of working out a long lasting solution, and also for the future sites. This time round they found another opportunity that could bring them closer to partner with KDI’s community, environmental and business work by equipping our partner communities with skills and materials through a bamboo plantation and training project. Meeting the New Nairobi Dam Community Group at KPSP01, the team showed an interest in the work and commitment portrayed by the group and their potential, in doing a new kind of project with them. And so they planned a trip to Kibera, and finally they met, this time round not to treat the bamboos but to give ideas of future, long-lasting success. First it was an introduction of their aim of visit, then followed by checking the land and determining the viability of the plant to grow in the area, also the security of the young plant as it grows which was found to be positive, and so the plans were set so to start the process, with first knowing the size and the distance apart between the holes or the plantations. Look out for Part two that describes the planting.
